4.21.26

As we enter the final 31 days of the 2025–2026 school year, there is a great deal happening across our district. We are in full swing with state testing, spring sports, concerts, and many of the events and activities that make this time of year so special for our students and families. It is always an exciting and busy stretch as we work to finish the school year strong.

I would like to take a moment to share an important update regarding our middle school and high school facilities.

As part of our ongoing conversations regarding the future of our middle and high school facilities, we have been conducting a comprehensive facilities assessment to support our long-term planning efforts.  During that assessment, it was identified that there are several areas of moisture-related corrosion within crawl spaces at both the middle school and high school. The conditions vary, ranging from moderate surface rust to more significant deterioration in some sections.

Out of an abundance of caution and in consultation with our engineers, we are taking immediate steps to address these areas. As a result, a few spaces within our buildings will be temporarily taken out of use while repairs are completed. This includes select locker room shower areas, the freezer in the high school kitchen, and two doorways that will be designated as emergency exits only for the time being.

We understand that these temporary adjustments may cause some inconvenience, and we appreciate your patience and understanding. Our team is actively working to remediate these areas as quickly and safely as possible. In addition, we will continue to address other identified areas proactively to prevent future concerns. The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority, and we will continue to keep you informed as work progresses.

After Prom Fundraiser – The Bucking Barista

The After Prom Committee will be hosting The Bucking Barista Coffee Truck on Friday, April 24th from 2:30–7:00 PM. With the Eastwood Relays, as well as baseball and softball games taking place that evening, it is expected to be a busy and exciting night on campus. The Bucking Barista will be available for anyone interested in stopping by for coffee or other beverages.

Eastwood Youth Camps

We are excited to offer several youth summer camp opportunities for our students.

The Eastwood Youth Volleyball Camp will take place June 15th–16th in the elementary gym for students entering grades 3–8 in the 2026–2027 school year. This camp is designed for all skill levels and will focus on ball control, passing, setting, serving, and attacking. The registration deadline to receive a camp t-shirt is April 30.

The Eastwood Youth Boys Basketball Camp will be held June 9–11 for students entering grades 1–8 next school year. This is another great opportunity for our younger Eagles to build skills and connect with our program. The registration deadline for this camp is May 15.

Kindergarten Screening – Class of 2039

It is hard to believe, but we are already preparing to welcome the Class of 2039. Kindergarten registration for the 2026–2027 school year is approaching. If your child will be five years old on or before August 25, 2026, you may begin the pre-registration process through FinalForms.

We are excited to welcome our newest Eagles to Eastwood Elementary, where friendships begin, confidence grows, and a lifelong love of learning takes flight.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of Eastwood Local Schools. We appreciate your flexibility as we address facility needs and your involvement in the many activities that make our district so special.

4.10.26

With Spring Break behind us, we are entering the final stretch of the school year. As we move forward, I would like to share several important updates and provide a look ahead to planning for the 2026–2027 school year.

After months of discussion and careful review, I will be recommending the closure of the Pemberville Elementary building for the 2026–2027 school year. As we have previously shared, the cost of returning to the building—combined with the uncertainty of additional repairs—makes reopening a difficult decision at this time. Long-term decisions regarding the future of the building will be made by the Board of Education.

As part of this recommendation, we are planning the following adjustments:

  • Transitioning 5th grade fully to the Middle School

  • Permanently housing Preschool in the Elementary building

This shift will require thoughtful planning, particularly at the Middle School, as we work through classroom configurations and space. We have explored several options and will continue refining plans to best meet the needs of our students and staff.

For families of current 4th grade students, this means that as 5th graders next year, students will attend school full-time in the Middle School building. Currently, 5th graders already utilize the Middle School for electives and lunch, so this transition builds on existing routines. One of the primary changes will be a shift to the middle/high school daily time schedule.

As we work through this transition, our goal is to preserve as many of the meaningful elementary experiences as possible, while also integrating students into the opportunities available at the middle school. We understand that events and traditions are important to students and families, and those conversations are an important part of our planning process. While some elements may not carry over in the same way, we are committed to ensuring students continue to have meaningful and engaging experiences.

Our administrative team is actively developing detailed plans for each building and will continue to share updates as those plans are finalized. As with any transition of this size, we recognize there may be challenges along the way, but we are committed to working through them together with a focus on what is best for students.

3.5.26

With today’s closure, we have now used eight calamity days for the school year. Beginning with our next cancellation, any additional days will need to be made up at the end of the school year. Make-up days will be added to the calendar starting June 4.

The decision to cancel school is never easy. Please know that student and staff safety remains my top priority, and we will continue to make decisions with that in mind.

Administrative Updates for 2026–2027

After much conversation and valuable input, we are moving forward with several administrative adjustments for next school year.

As previously shared, we conducted an unsuccessful search for the open Assistant Superintendent position. In response, we have posted a Director of Curriculum and Personnel position. This role will focus on curriculum, instruction, professional development, and portions of personnel oversight. The position was posted earlier this week.

With the hiring of Scott Sorg as Middle School Principal, we are now in the unique position of having both the Middle School and High School Assistant Principal/Athletic Director roles open. After significant discussion, we have decided to separate the Assistant Principal and Athletic Director duties at both levels.

For the 2026–2027 school year, we will hire:

  • One Middle School Assistant Principal

  • One High School Assistant Principal

  • One 7–12 Athletic Director

Through this restructuring, we aim to provide clearer role definitions and improved services to our students, staff, and community — all with little to no additional cost to the district. These positions will be posted in the coming days.

Assistant Principal responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Daily building operations

  • Teacher evaluations

  • Student discipline and attendance

  • 504 and IEP oversight

  • Continued improvement of gifted services and career technical programming

  • Supporting athletics through event coverage

Athletic Director responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Oversight of the entire 7–12 athletic program

  • Personnel management

  • Financial oversight

  • OHSAA compliance

  • Event operations

  • Captains meetings

  • Overall leadership and development of athletic programs

Tech Drive

It’s time to dust off your devices and join our CLC STARS Tech Drive!

From now through April 24, we are inviting families to donate old, broken, or unused electronics — including phones, tablets, laptops, and more — instead of tossing them away.

Every donated device helps in two powerful ways:
♻️ It keeps harmful waste out of landfills and gives old tech a new purpose.
💙 A portion of the proceeds will support a local Wood County charity, showing our students the true meaning of giving back.

Thank you for helping us make a positive environmental and community impact!

Eastwood High School Blood Drive

Eastwood High School will host a Blood Drive in the high school gymnasium on:

Friday, March 13, 2026
8:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

The more units collected, the more scholarship funds we are able to award to our students. We currently have several open appointment slots. Please see the attached flyer for scheduling information.

Kindergarten Screening – Class of 2039

It is hard to believe, but our future Class of 2039 is getting ready to begin their journey!

Kindergarten registration for the 2026–2027 school year is approaching, and we are excited to welcome our newest Eagles to Eastwood Elementary — where friendships begin, confidence grows, and a lifelong love of learning takes flight.

If your child will be five years old on or before August 25, 2026, you may begin pre-registration in FinalForms starting March 1.

Please see the attached flyer for screening dates and additional registration details. We look forward to partnering with you from screening day to that very first bus ride.

Board of Education Meeting: The next Board of Education meeting will be held: Monday, March 16, 2026 6:00 p.m.Eastwood Elementary School Cafeteria

2.27.26

As many of you are aware, the Pemberville Elementary building experienced significant flooding in January. Since that time, our maintenance team has worked diligently to gather information and fully assess the condition of the building. At Monday’s Board of Education meeting, we shared an update on where things currently stand.

At this point, we know the overall condition of the building presents serious concerns. The estimated cost to restore the building to a point of re-entry begins at approximately $850,000. The largest projected expenses include:

  • Roof replacement – approximately $325,000

  • Drainage improvements – approximately $150,000

  • Plumbing – approximately $113,000

These figures do not include potential additional repairs to plumbing within the walls once water service is restored. As you can see by the cost estimates below, the costs escalate quickly.

The issues are real, and we are faced with difficult decisions as we determine what is best for Eastwood’s students, staff, and community. We remain committed to making thoughtful, responsible decisions and will continue to keep you informed as discussions progress.

Please see the presentation link for a visual overview of the current conditions.

Kindergarten Screening – Class of 2039

It is hard to believe, but our future Class of 2039 is preparing to spread their wings!

Kindergarten registration for the 2026–2027 school year is just around the corner, and we are excited to welcome our newest Eagles to Eastwood Elementary. This is where friendships begin, confidence grows, and a lifelong love of learning takes flight.

Families residing in the Eastwood School District may begin pre-registration in Final Forms starting March 1. From screening day to that first bus ride, we look forward to partnering with you every step of the way.

2.13.26

Eastwood Community,

What a busy two weeks it has been since the flood at Pemberville Elementary. While the challenges have been significant, this experience has also been a powerful reminder of how incredible our staff, students, families, and community truly are. The phrase “It takes a village” has never felt more accurate. We are extremely grateful for the support, flexibility, and encouragement shown across our entire district and community.

Here are a few updates:

Pemberville Building
We are continuing to gather information and assess the necessary repairs at the Pemberville building. Our goal is to provide a full update and hold discussion at the February 23 Board of Education meeting, which will take place in the Eastwood Elementary cafeteria. We appreciate your patience as we work through this process thoughtfully and thoroughly.

Preschool Relocation
Preschool has successfully transitioned to the elementary media center, where two classrooms have been established. We passed inspection on Monday, hosted an open house for families on Tuesday, and welcomed preschool students back to class on Wednesday.

This was a tremendous accomplishment in a very short amount of time. There were many obstacles along the way, but our staff persevered through every challenge to ensure a smooth return for our youngest learners.

The Board Office has also been temporarily divided between two locations. The Treasurer’s Office is now housed in the Transportation Building, while the remaining central office staff is located at the high school.

None of this would have been possible without the collective effort of so many individuals—from preschool staff, elementary staff and administration, secretaries, maintenance and custodial teams, transportation, and staff across all buildings. This was truly a team effort.

I would also like to recognize Nick Hannan, Bob Strow, Matt Bostdorff, and Missy Wagoner for their leadership and steady guidance throughout this process. Their work behind the scenes has been invaluable.

Assistant Superintendent Search
Our recent search for the Assistant Superintendent did not conclude as we had hoped. It is important that we find the right individual for Eastwood—someone who is highly qualified and a strong fit for our culture and community. I will not settle for anything less. We will be retitling the position and reposting it, with the new posting expected sometime next week. We remain committed to finding the right person for this important role.

Cameron Brinker – OMEA All-State Orchestra
Eastwood High School is proud to congratulate senior bassoonist Cameron Brinker on his outstanding performance in the 2026 Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) All-State Orchestra.

Cameron was selected through a highly competitive audition process among students from across the state—an incredible achievement. The prestigious ensemble performed on Saturday, January 31, at the OMEA Professional Conference in the Greater Columbus Convention Center under the direction of Helen Cha-Pyo, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts (New Jersey).

We are incredibly proud of Cameron and look forward to seeing where his talent takes him next.

After Prom Fundraisers
If you are attending tonight’s game, please be on the lookout for the After Prom “Dash for Cash” fundraiser at halftime. Students will be collecting donations throughout the stands, and the student who collects the most will receive a free After Prom ticket. Thank you in advance for supporting this great event.

The After Prom Committee also has two upcoming fundraisers:

  • Red Robin Fundraiser – February 25

  • Chipotle Fundraiser – March 3

Please consider participating and supporting our students.

Hometown Heroes Memorial Walk
The Pemberville 150th/America 250th Anniversary Committee is planning a “Hometown Heroes Memorial Walk.” Signs honoring past and present service members and first responders (they do not need to be from the Pemberville area) will be displayed at Pemberville Veterans Park along Memorial Drive from May 24 through May 31.

More information about the Hometown Heroes Program and the full list of 2026 events can be found on the Pemberville 150th Anniversary website. Applications are available at the Pemberville, Luckey, and Stony Ridge libraries. Assistance with applications and photo scanning will also be available at the Pemberville Public Library meeting room on February 18 and March 23 from 4:00–6:30 p.m.

Thank you for your continued support of our students, staff, and schools. Together, we will continue moving forward—stronger than ever.

Go Eagles!

Eastwood Families and Community,

I want to share an important update regarding the Pemberville building. Yesterday, a waterline break occurred, resulting in significant damage to the facility. Multiple crews have been working around the clock and will continue throughout the weekend to address the situation.

The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. As a result, the Pemberville building will remain closed until further notice while cleanup efforts continue and a full assessment of the damage is completed. District leaders are working closely with contractors and service providers to determine next steps.

At this time, our plan is to temporarily relocate Pre-K classes to the elementary school. After carefully reviewing preschool licensing requirements and available space within the district and surrounding facilities, the elementary school media center (library) will be used as the temporary preschool classrooms.

At this point, we do not know how long this arrangement will be needed. We need to be prepared for the possibility that this temporary location could remain in place for the remainder of the school year. This decision applies to the current school year only, and if longer-term plans become necessary, the district will re-evaluate options and communicate accordingly.

We understand that this situation is disruptive for students, families, and staff, and we appreciate your patience and understanding. It is during times like this that the strength of our district and community truly shows. While this is not an easy situation, we are grateful for the flexibility and support shown by our school community as we work through these challenges together.

We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. Thank you for your continued support of our students and schools.

Eastwood Students & Families,

Today marks our fifth calamity day so far this school year. As we are in the heart of winter, we anticipate the possibility of additional weather-related concerns over the next few months.

Should we experience additional calamity days beyond today, we will begin making up school days through virtual learning. This process will mirror what we have successfully implemented in previous years. Specifically, calamity days 6, 7, and 8 will be completed using online lessons.

For students in grades 6–12, virtual learning days will include live, online meetings with teachers from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Building principals will share detailed schedules, and attendance will be taken and is mandatory. Students are encouraged to check their email regularly for communication from their principals and teachers. This format has been in place since the 2020–21 school year and has proven to work well. While this approach may feel new to some students and families, it is a model with which we have significant experience.

At the elementary level, procedures will differ between the grade levels. Elementary administration and staff will provide families with an overview of expectations and what learning will look like should it be needed.

For our Eastwood preschoolers, preschool teachers will communicate directly with families regarding plans and expectations for any additional calamity days.

After we reach calamity day 8, any additional days may be added to the end of the school year in June.

If questions arise, we encourage families and students to reach out directly to their building administration for guidance and support.

We appreciate your continued flexibility and support as we navigate winter weather together. Thank you for your partnership in ensuring continuity of learning for our students.
