Digital Resources & Data Privacy

All digital resources, tools, programs, apps, etc. that share student data must be district approved so that we not only adhere to the regulations of Ohio Senate Bill 29 (SB29) but also manage and care for the information entrusted to us from our students and staff.

The ELS Digital Resources Inventory List holds a listing of digital resources that staff have requested to use.
There are 4 tabs in this inventory spreadsheet:

  1. Green Tab - resources that have Data Privacy Agreements (DPAs)
  2. Yellow Tab - resources with usage limitations (usually these are resources only teachers can use)
  3. Red Tab - resources that cannot be used by anyone - declined because the vendor will not sign or adhere to a DPA
  4. Blue Tab - resources that we are currently seeking a DPA for - cannot be used yet

Digital Resource Request Form - If you do not see a resource in the inventory list, and have determined you will use it in a way that collects student data, request that a privacy agreement (DPA) be sought by completing the Digital Resource Request Form.

Use the Decision Making Flowchart for Digital Resources (image below) to determine if a Data Privacy Agreement (DPA) is needed and if so, begin the process of making your request.

Ohio Senate Bill 29

What are the requirements of Ohio Senate Bill 29 (SB29)?

SB29 aims to protect student data privacy and ensure transparency in how schools handle student information.  SB29 impacts how schools collect and use student data, including data from school-issued devices. It requires increased communication with families about technology use and outlines regulations on what districts can monitor and share.  For more details, view the information on our Student Data Privacy page.

How does SB29 impact the use of technology in the classroom?

Technology remains an integral part of the classroom and involves leveraging the use of digital tools to foster an environment that empowers learners and supports instruction. Staff simply needs to be mindful about how they use student data, use only district-approved resources, and adhere to the guidelines for requesting the use of a new digital resource.
