Revenue Numbers
· General Property Taxes - $440,832 above projections – This number looks like we were way off in our projections. HOWEVER, Nexus paid an amount in February that is close to what it paid all of last year. Frankly, their pattern of payments has been erratic. They have appealed their valuation at least 4 times since it was originally valued resulting in different payments. There is a chance that they have paid the full year of their assessment in February which will make FY 2022 look good, but FY 2023 will see potentially a decline of $400,000 since we will only get one half of the taxes instead of a full year. It will all balance out, but it can make the years look off.
· Income Tax – No change
· Unrestricted and Restricted Grants-in-aid – These two lines seem to indicate that we are getting $346,000 more than planned for the year. HOWEVER, as we stated last month, this is the result of overpayments and will correct itself. Combined, the payments for March show they clawed back roughly $62,000 and we can expect that to continue through April, Mat, and June.
Expense Numbers
· Our expenses through the first 9 months of the fiscal year are tracking closely to our projections. They actual costs are 1.01% below estimates thus far. Nothing significant here.
Summary
March looks much better than it should because of Nexus and some overpayments on the revenue side of things. Regardless, we are in decent shape compared to our projections which is good news.

Dear Community Members:
Nothing like starting Spring Break with mid-30s and a little snow. If you are traveling during Spring Break, please be safe and we wish you all the best (special mention for our band students who left this morning for Disney!). I hope the time will be a blessing to you and your family.
We have several staff members who will be off during break, so the phones may not get answered right away, but messages will get through and we will return them ASAP.
We have a number of projects that will be going on this week with the kids out of the buildings. Some will be in preparation for further work this summer and others will be geared towards routine maintenance.
LOOKING FOR SUMMER HELP
We are looking for help with our grounds this spring and summer, as well as with summer cleaning. This is a great summer job for kids coming home from school. If you are interested, please email our Director of Operations, Kris Wagoner, at kwagoner@eastwoodschools.org.
SAD NEWS
Earlier this week, 2017 graduate Colten Schroeder passed away after a single vehicle crash. Colten was well-liked by his peers and our staff and his loss is heartbreaking. Our deepest condolences go out to his parents Jeff and Tiffanie as well as his siblings Barton, Chelsea, Corrine, and Sierra. Arrangements still appear to be pending. Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers.

Dear Community Members:
I hope this email finds you well and with all of your patio furniture still in the county. I have several notes for you today including some summer job opportunities.
PASSING OF TED WHALEN
For the parents out there who attended Eastwood, you most likely had Coach Whalen as a teacher or coach along the way somewhere. Ted was a building sub when I started and worked in multiple roles after he retired. Whalen was unique and always made you smile. He loved Eastwood and we loved him back.
Here is his obituary from Marsh and Marsteller:
Please keep Ted’s family in your thoughts and prayers.
FUTURE FACILITIES THOUGHTS
On March 21st the Board passed a resolution that will allow Eastwood to get on the list for future facilities funding. This is a preliminary step that will allow the district to have its Master Plan reevaluated by the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission. The earliest they would be out to conduct any kids of update is sometime in 2023.
The Board took this step for several reasons.
1. If the district is going to pursue a project that would update or replace the MS and HS, you need to have some idea of the costs and scope of the project.
2. The Elementary School bonds will be paid off in June of 2025 and the district will have no debt.
3. Our operating budget will benefit from paying off the school, and we would be in a position to consider a bond issue.
4. It’s time. The HS opened in 1960 and is 62 years old and the MS is just 10 years younger. At some point you need to consider major overhauls or replacement. While they still function well, the best time plan for the future is when there is no imminent issue.
This was an initial step in what will be a long process.
WEEK ONE OF TESTING IS IN THE BOOKS
State testing got underway this week for kids in grades 3-5 and will continue next week throughout the district. I think the plan is to wrap up all the language arts testing before break and then hit math, science and social studies after we get back.
Our teachers and kids have worked very hard this year. When I spoke to some of the 4th graders today as they were getting ready, I just told them to relax and do their best. They are great kids who have put in the work. No matter what happens, I am proud of them!
If you see your kids getting anxious, please encourage them and let them know that all anyone ever wants is their best effort!
SPRING BREAK IS COMING
Next week is the last before we get to Spring Break. It has been a long run since the first of the year, and I think everyone is ready.

There are two numbers that are inflated and will be corrected in the coming months.
1. Unrestricted Grants-in-Aid - +$180,103.83 – As we pointed out last month, the state is still trying to get the funding mechanism nailed down for the new funding formula. While this is only 5.62% above our projections, it is a decent sized number. Once this is all settled, we expect this to be much closer to our projections.
2. Restricted Grants-in-Aid - +$250,824.09 – This number will come down in the coming months as well. Please see above. It may end up being $50,000 over our projections as we learn about how the funding formula will be implemented.
There are no real surprises on the expenses. We are able to move some expenses in Capital Outlay into our Permanent Improvement Fund. We will also be looking to purchase two buses in the coming months. We will have some reimbursement from the state to help offset some of those costs.
We are hanging in.
